Doing a Self-Assessment – Career Hour

Self-assessments are just one of the ways you can do an introspective on yourself - to understand what experiences, skills, knowledge and behaviours you have that make you competent at the role you perform. Once you have that understanding, you can use it to further improve on those areas you're already performing strongly at - and of course, address some of the weaknesses that become apparent. We take a look at self-assessments with the PMO Competency Framework.

The Future of PMO – Whitepaper Review

At the beginning of 2021, Chaucer, the consulting firm which focuses on change and transformation, released a whitepaper called The Future of PMO. The paper was created based on the insights of 85 PMO professionals across 13 different industries. The report itself focused on what the PMO was doing well; the main areas that need improvement and some key themes about where the future lies for PMO. As you can expect from a report like this, it is Chaucer's clients who are completing the survey so we're looking at organisations that use a consultancy to help with the PMO. The report is also predominantly focused on programme level PMOs. If you'd like to see the main highlights from the report, you can get these in the 5 page PDF download here:

Goal Setting for PMO Teams

We often get asked about metrics and measures for the PMO. You might already be aware of the Inside PMO Report we have which is focused on this subject. There’s a difference between the metrics and measures that the PMO contributes to – such as project success rates and the ones which focus on how well the PMO services are received by the organisation. There is one other area too that tends to get overlooked, and that’s the metrics and measures of the PMO team itself – is the team meeting the objectives and goals of the organisation. There is a specific goal system that can be used: OKRs (that’s objectives and key results to you and me) have been popular with tech start-ups for years and they seem to have hit the mainstream with more and more organisations adopting the OKR approach to goal and direction setting. OKRs aren’t just for Silicon Valley, they can be a great tool for PMOs to clearly define what they and the portfolios they support are setting out to achieve – and how the goals of the PMO align with the goals of the organisation. Do you know your KRs from your KPIs? Are your goals likely to have people saying O-wow!… or simply O-dear? John McIntyre from HotPMO helped us explore what OKRs are and how they can be used to align and accelerate PMO performance. Login to see the session; the deck, the writeup and the insights:

The Art of the Possible – Making the Difference When it Matters the Most: Virgin Atlantic ePMO

I think we can all appreciate just how the aviation and travel industry was impacted in 2020 and still is today (at the time of writing in February 2021) Good news stories were hard to come by and we weren't expecting to hear one which specifically put the PMO at the centre. We had the opportunity to hear that story from Virgin Atlantic's VP of Transformation and Head of ePMO. Called the Art of the Possible, the PMO was all set with a kickoff event in January 2020 with the aim to support the organisation's ambitious plans, to do that they "needed real, rapid and reimagined organisational transformation, not only to the way we think about and plan but how we deliver change" This was the dream: imagine being able to see all of your demand in one place ranked by ease of implementation (RIICE) and the value to your organisation (BVI) that can be directly linked to bottom-line impacting KPIs with benefits that are traceable that everyone is aligned to what you are doing and understands the context of why Then the pandemic hit. Find out what happened and how they made it possible.
