Doing a Self-Assessment – Career Hour

Self-assessments are just one of the ways you can do an introspective on yourself - to understand what experiences, skills, knowledge and behaviours you have that make you competent at the role you perform. Once you have that understanding, you can use it to further improve on those areas you're already performing strongly at - and of course, address some of the weaknesses that become apparent. We take a look at self-assessments with the PMO Competency Framework.

PMO Service: Capability Development and Competency Frameworks

One of the P3M Enabling competences with the House of PMO Competency Framework is Capability Development.  The definition of the competence is to “assess and support the continuous development of individual competence and collective professionalism to successfully deliver the current and anticipated portfolio of change”.  This competence is required for the development of competence frameworks and role profiles for all those involved in the delivery of the portfolio – including Sponsors, Portfolio, Programme and Project Managers and PMO staff. On our inaugural PMO panel discussion, there were three individuals with a wealth of experience in developing role profiles, bespoke competence frameworks, developing career paths, undertaking competence assessment and planning development activities, to share their experiences and provide practical hints and tips.

Everything You Need to Know – PMO Competency Framework

After three years, the PMO Competency Framework has been launched by PMO Flashmob and the House of PMO. The PMO Competency Framework really is a PMO community project – created by PMO practitioners for PMO practitioners. For many years, PMO practitioners have been the poorer relatives to others in the PPM community who have had for many years now, a competency framework and assessment which enables them to understand their strengths and discover their skills gaps. The PMO Competency Framework is a career tool that not only allows you to assess yourself against existing PMO role profiles, it is also a great tool for understanding what’s possible in a PMO career and which areas to concentrate on to increase your competency. For years now we heard that creating a PMO Competency Framework wasn’t possible – if all PMOs are different, how on earth could something be created? Well, it is possible and it’s available for anyone who works in a PMO regardless of the type of role you perform and the level you do that at. Find out more about the PMO Competency Framework with the recording of the launch session:

PMO Competency Team Exercise

The PMO Competency Framework project is still ongoing. We've started the part where we write the competencies. We'll be doing this throughout March and into April. It's exciting seeing the competency framework starting to come to life and the people getting involved are doing a great job. Last month we had a social evening in a pub near Whitehall, London and we wanted to get people talking about PMO competencies plus any outcomes to those conversations could get fed back into the project.
