I recently spent a stimulating couple of days at Project Challenge last month. One of the presentations I managed to catch was entitled "Stop Implementing a PPM Tool, and Start Solving the Problem", given by Stephen Brown of Polarisoft, from which I thought you might appreciate me relating the key take-aways.
This presentation highlighted the disappointment felt by many organisations after implementing a project portfolio management (PPM) tool, when they find that the reality of working with the tool doesn't live up to their (often unrealistically optimistic) expectations. This is commonly embodied in thoughts like "We bought the wrong tool" or "We're not mature enough for a tool".

Last week we carried out our first PMO Mini-Masterclass. These evenings are about a little PMO learning combined with networking with other PMO professionals. There was a time when Project Challenge was all about projects and project management. More recently we're seeing a lot more seminars and exhibitors that count PMO practitioners as their audience. The next Project Challenge takes place on the 6th and 7th October at London's Olympia in Kensington.
Why are we telling you this?
Well, PMO Flashmob have taken a stand there for the show and we'll also be presenting on the first day too.
We thought it would be a good idea to talk to more PMO practitioners about what we're doing with the PMO Flashmob, plus it'll be great to see people there who have already attended previous PMO Flashmobs.

A short article focused on "5 Things You Hate About Your Project Management Tools"
Unfortunately for me, the seminar didn't really deliver much in terms of PMO content - project management content yes, nitty-gritty PMO is evolving content, sadly no. Are my expectations too high? Or did I get it wrong? I still think we can have PMO seminars that don't slip into project delivery related talks (as good as they were, especially the talk from Stephen Carver on Complex Projects, there's a little video here)
