Last week was Project Challenge and in this session - recorded at the show - we looked at the PMO role. Here's the overview: What do you need to think about to get a great PMO role? In this session, Lindsay takes a look at the CV, the social media present, reading adverts, training & development, knowing what you’re selling and understanding how employers hire PMO people. It’s a whistle-stop tour with lots of practical insights, tips and things you can put into practice straight away. The PMO is the Knowledge Broker?

At the last PMO Flashmob Online, we thought it would be good to try out a little experiment. We asked people to take a look at a piece of published PMO research and then join in the virtual PMO Flashmob where we could have a chat about that research. The research we went for was 'Project management office' a knowledge broker in project-based organisations' [you can download and have a read of that yourself here] It's a paper that was published in the International Journal of Project Management back in 2013 and touches on a few challenges that PMOs still face today - namely knowledge transfer - and yes it mentions lessons learned a few times too. In this article, we decided to share the highlights of the research (because we know that reading research papers are not everyone's cup of tea) Let's get started and get a few definitions out on the table so we know what we're dealing with.

Inside PMO \\ Agile PMO

Many PMOs now need to support Agile projects as well as traditional waterfall projects, moving to be a hybrid or bimodal PMO. PMO Flashmob launch the latest Inside PMO report bringing insights from PMO Managers working in hybrid PMOs today. The report looks at the functions and services required and answers the questions – what stays the same, what needs to change, and what is new. The question for the PMO community is, “do you understand what additional skills and competencies you need working in a hybrid PMO?” Many of the skills you have are still required, but some will need further honing or developed from scratch.  The report looks at how the services of the PMO change when supporting Agile projects and what associated skills you will need to have to do that successfully.
