It was Project Challenge again this week - the Project Management Expo in London and once again we met new PMO professionals who had yet to experience the delights of PMO Flashmob!
Each time we do the show we always think it’s a good idea to capture some of the thoughts of the visitors - for one, it helps us capture potential future topics for PMO Flashmob events - and it also helps us do a quick temperature check on common challenge areas for people working in PMO (after all the show is called Project Challenge!). It’s not scientific but do always ask the question about what challenges people are facing and over the last few years of doing this, we certainly see some trends.
Current PMO Challenges
We asked the question, what’s your biggest PMO challenge?

I recently spent a day at Project Challenge. If you work in projects and you don't know about this event, then you should really make the effort to go. Over two Autumn days in London (and in some years one spring day in Birmingham), you have the opportunity to hear the latest thinking from industry speakers, talk to PM software and training providers, membership organisations and consultants. If (like me) you've been around the industry for a few years, you're bound to bump into someone you know who you haven't seen for a while.
I was helping Lindsay and Eileen to crew the PMO FlashMob stand, and met some interesting people with some interesting challenges - from the PM trying to improve the way the emergency services work together, through the PM considering a move into PMO in the laundry business, to the cool dude in the bright yellow suit giving away Starbucks vouchers!
Whilst I was there I managed to take in a few presentations. Here are some highlights:

During our time at Project Challenge, we presented to a PMO audience on the topic of "Challenges and Trends in a PMO Career". I presented three challenges related to finding new opportunities and Eileen Roden presented three challenges whilst in post as a PMO professional. For the second part we did the same but this time focused on the trends we're seeing.
The presentation was well received - pitched at the right level for the audience - so it makes sense that we would want to share the presentation with you too.
Here's the presentation, available through Prezi. Below you can access the two video presentations.

Last week we had two days at Project Challenge, it was a first for us and we were delighted to have so many PMO people come and visit us. During the show we decided to give people a feel for what PMO Flashmob is like so we decided to have the PMO wall.
Essentially we had three topic areas going. One about PMO training, another on current challenges and the third one on trends. Visitors put up their thoughts, other people added new ones or just added comments to what was already there. There are some interesting insights and it certainly made our two days much more fun than a normal, dry exhibition!
Here Eileen, Ken and I give you the overview on what came out over the two days:

There was a time when Project Challenge was all about projects and project management. More recently we're seeing a lot more seminars and exhibitors that count PMO practitioners as their audience. The next Project Challenge takes place on the 6th and 7th October at London's Olympia in Kensington.
Why are we telling you this?
Well, PMO Flashmob have taken a stand there for the show and we'll also be presenting on the first day too.
We thought it would be a good idea to talk to more PMO practitioners about what we're doing with the PMO Flashmob, plus it'll be great to see people there who have already attended previous PMO Flashmobs.
We're planning a few little activities throughout the duration of the show so if you're in town, why not come along and say hello!
