Four Key PMO Challenge Areas - One Big Training Day
PMO Learn! features four key theme areas
Facilitation Skills | Metrics & Measures | Coaching Conversations | Value Streams
Each learning session features the theory and practical application approaches followed by classroom exercises.
It’s just like being in the largest PMO classroom training you’ve ever had

Facilitation Skills
Facilitation skills are a must for anyone working in a PMO. The PMO can provide that independent facilitation role in a number of different areas such as workshops, training, reviews and meetings. We can provide a service to different projects and programmes in sessions such as project kickoff and lessons learnt. We can utilise the facilitation processes and the associated techniques in diverse settings to really help our organisations create sessions that focus on capability development or review strategies. In an situation where a problem needs solving and people need to work creatively and collaboratively, we can help.

Metrics and Measures
The PMO has two different perspectives when it comes to utilising metrics and measures – the first, how do we use them when supporting delivery – be that Waterfall, Agile and a mixture of both – hybrid projects & programmes. Included in that is the portfolio view too. The second – does the PMO really add value to our organisations and if so, can we measure that? Or how are our services working for the organisation? And as a team, are we working well? Metrics and measures are linked to the way we collect and collate data, creating information which helps decisions get made and actions taken.

Value Streams
The PMO now works in an environment where there are many different ways to deliver change; waterfall, Agile, Lean, product. With a push towards business agility there is additional focus on increasing the value being delivered for customers.

Coaching Conversations
Coaching has often been identified as a key skill for PMO professionals, one which increases our ability to be a valued partner to the business and to the people our PMO supports. We have many experiences to share yet most of us are not qualified coaches. There is a middle ground and that is through the conversations we have every day. We can utilise different approaches in our conversations with peers, colleagues and senior management to meet our objectives of supporting decision-making and successful delivery.

Facilitation Skills for the PMO
At great theme to get us started for the day as we can use what we’re learning throughout the rest of the day too. Being a great facilitator comes with years of practice – it’s all in the planning and using different techniques depending on what outcome you’re looking to achieve.
We’ll learn about the facilitation process and crucially focus on example facilitated sessions that PMO practitioners are most likely to run and manage.
10.30am - 11.00am
The Facilitation Skills Practical Challenge
Our first practical challenge for the day. Throughout the day, delegates will be presented with a common PMO challenge. It’s a problem that needs solving and you’ll be working in table teams to do that.
It’s an opportunity to put what you’ve learnt to the test and also spend some time talking to your peers to swap ideas and insights.
In this facilitation challenge you could be planning a session or trying out some of the techniques you’ve been learning about.
11.00am - 11.20am
Coffee Break
First break of the day and a time to chat about what you’ve learnt and what you’re thinking about so far.
11.20am - 12.10pm
PMO Metrics and Measures
In this session we take a look at metrics and measures. It’s the tricky hybrid ways of delivering projects and programmes that gets our attention for the first part of this session. If we’re delivering using waterfall and agile, how do we measure this? How can we do this at project, programme and portfolio levels?
We will also be looking at those metrics and measures that demonstrate that the PMO really is delivering value to the organisation too.
12.10pm - 12.40pm
The Metrics and Measures Challenge
We’ll be testing our knowledge as well as trying to find the answers for the PMO challenge posed in this session.
With a quiz format to get us started – this metrics and measures conundrum for the PMO will require everyone in the table teams to get involved.
12.40pm - 1.30pm
Lunch
With 100 PMO practitioners in attendance, it’s also a great day for making new connections with your peers
1.30pm - 2.30pm
Value Streams and the PMO
Managing and optimising value streams are the next part of the Agile PMO puzzle. With enterprise-wide agility increasingly important at the executive level. PMOs need to understand that what happens at the portfolio level plus how change is delivered impacts organisational agility. Value stream management provides the techniques to help deliver change faster, and cheaper.
Value stream management takes into account the whole delivery organisation and in this workshop, we take a look at what this means for the role of the PMO.
2.30pm - 3.00pm
The Value Stream Challenge
Time to get practical with your peers with this PMO challenge on value streams. In this workshop we will be working together, focusing on project methods, processes, people and tools – the delivery system.
Together we will be uncovering how organisational agility really impacts the work the PMO and the additional business value that we can provide.
3.00pm - 3.20pm
Afternoon Tea
There’s still time to meet someone new over a cup of tea and some much needed cake!
3.20pm - 4.20pm
Coaching Conversations
In this session its time to focus on the more behavioural side of the job we do. We focus on one of the main objectives of PMOs – helping and supporting those in the delivery organisation who need help to get their job done.
Whilst the PMO can train and mentor – we focus on how we can use coaching conversations to help others help themselves.
4.20pm - 4.50pm
The PMO Coaching Conversation Challenge
Are you ready for an action learning problem to solve?
In our practical challenge exercise following the coaching conversation session, delegates will be working together to solve a very familiar problem seen in PMOs every day.
4.50pm - 5.00pm
Final Words and Farewell
After a busy day of learning, connecting and networking – we close the day with one last round of insight sharing.
