SUMMARY:Mega Projects Conference (Virtual)
DESCRIPTION:Breaking the Iron Law: Megaprojects Conference \nPMOs are increasingly involved in supporting complex\, large-scale programmes and portfolios – from infrastructure and transformation initiatives to capital-intensive projects. This conference explores how project professionals can reframe what’s possible in capital-intensive\, complex\, and megaproject delivery and help break the so-called “Iron Law of Megaprojects” – projects that run over budget\, over time\, and under deliver\, again and again. \nHosted by P3GQA\, this multi-day event brings together global experts and practitioners to share frameworks\, insights\, and real-world cases on how to deliver better outcomes in megaprojects. \nKeynote Day – 8 December\nThe centrepiece of the conference\, Keynote Day brings together some of the most influential figures shaping the future of megaproject delivery. \n\nProfessor Bent Flyvbjerg – the originator of the “Iron Law of Megaprojects” and the most cited scholar in the field. He will share the latest research and practical heuristics for breaking the cycle of failure in capital-intensive projects.\nBecky Wood – newly appointed CEO of the UK’s National Infrastructure and Service Transformation Authority (NISTA). She brings deep experience from major government projects and will speak about the future of national infrastructure delivery and the role of collaboration.\nAntonio Nieto-Rodríguez – leading voice on the Project Economy\, HBR author\, and former PMI Chair. He will share insights on how organisations can thrive in the transformation age by prioritising and leading strategic initiatives.\n\n\nAlongside these headline speakers\, the day features contributions from senior figures across industry and academia\, including PMI Fellows\, authors\, and advisers who have defined many of the standards and practices used in project management today. \nFor PMOs\, this is an opportunity to: \n\nUnderstand the systemic challenges that lead to overruns and under-delivery in megaprojects.\nLearn from both research and real-world examples of governance\, sponsorship\, and benefits management done well.\nHear from thought leaders who are shaping the future of project delivery at national and global scale.\n\n  \nHouse of PMO’s Eileen Roden provides the closing keynote session of the day with ePMO Services for Capital Portfolios. See the full agenda. \nThe House of PMO community can purchase their seat at the conference: \nBook Your Place\n

SUMMARY:Systems Thinking Really Can Help with Complexity
DESCRIPTION:We’re joined by Prof Martin Parr\, expert in systems thinking and complex project management. \nWe often need to make difficult decisions e.g. how much should I invest in automation? Should I push my board harder to change? We always have limited information\, great pressure for results and divergent options; Systems Thinking can help with all of these. \nSystems Thinking is an established approach to dealing with complexity that is now championed by central government\, the World Health Organisation and the Royal Academy of Engineering. Systems Thinking has the power to get to the heart of our problems; and one of the really powerful things that Systems Thinking offers is the ability to take a group of stakeholders on a journey of discovery. This journey is an essential enabler for organisational change. \nMartin will highlight some big projects and decisions that have moved forward because of Systems Thinking. He will also demonstrate the benefits of systems thinking in a number of areas\, including national statistics data that highlights the difference that Systems Thinking has made to a UK national project. \nWe’ll leave this session having a deeper and more practical understanding about systems thinking and how it can help the PMO better support our own organisations. \nThis session aligns with the Skills section of the PMO Competency Framework – category: Thinking. \n  \nMore About Martin \nProf Martin Parr is an expert on systems thinking and has designed the curriculum for the UK’s first Level 7 systems thinking apprenticeship. Martin has worked for over 20 years as a consultant on complex projects\, many of which have been delivered for the UK public sector. Martin has provided advice to a number of programmes with annual budgets of over £1bn\, and has taken a systems approach to reviewing the governance arrangements for GMPP with a whole life cost of around £600bn. Martin is a Visiting Fellow at Cranfield University and the Department for Education. Martin hosts the Evolving Enterprises podcast. \n
