SUMMARY:PMO Services - What's Hot and What's Not?
DESCRIPTION:During the PMO Conference in London this year we like to gain insights from the PMO professionals attending and use a number of different interactive boards to gain the different perspectives on a particular theme. \nDuring this year’s conference we honed in on PMO Services. \nYou might already be familiar with the PMO Service Catalogue and the volunteer project currently running. We’ve previously run many sessions in this area because the ‘service-led’ approach to the PMO is so popular. \nIn this session\, we’ll be sharing the insights from all those who participated – they were asked: \n\nWhich services do you provide that are the most popular or ‘hottest’?\nWhich services do you provide that are least popular or the ‘coldest’?\nAnd ‘I want to deliver this service but don’t. . . . . why?’\n\nPlenty of insights were provided\, and we’ll review those and provide some further practical advice on what we uncover. \nThis is a great session to learn more about PMO services\, what others are doing in their organisations and have the opportunity to provide your insights too!

SUMMARY:WATCH PARTY - Prompt Engineering and the PMO
DESCRIPTION:This was such a popular session we ran in early June\, we thought it would make a great Watch Party session too. \nPrompt engineering is basically the art of crafting questions or commands that help guide AI models\, like ChatGPT\, CoPilot or Google Gemini\, to generate more accurate and useful responses or content. It involves understanding how to effectively communicate with the AI to get the best results\, whether that’s for generating text\, images\, or analysing data. It’s a bit like knowing the right way to ask a question to get the most informative answer. \nIn this session we’ll be taking a look at some of the core documentation and data that the PMO uses and crafting different prompts to help extract useful information and insights. \nThere will also be some live interaction with a couple of popular AI models (Co-Pilot and ChatGPT) \nThe House of PMO Watch Parties is the chance to see some of our most popular sessions again while we chat online while watching. To participate in the chat\, use your YouTube login and get involved.

SUMMARY:Career Hour - The PMO Career Checklist
DESCRIPTION:Career hour sessions are member-only events which are focused on some aspect of your PMO career. There has been plenty of themes already covered\, you can check them out in the Member’s Library here. \nThe sessions are run every other month and tend to be smaller groups of practitioners joining the session. In addition to the presentation\, there is the expectation that attendees will share their own experiences and insights for the benefit of the wider group. In this way\, career hour sessions are a great way to connect with others as well as taking away valuable career-related insights that could help you in your PMO own career. \nIn this month’s session we’re looking at the PMO Career Checklist. Every PMO professional loves a checklist so why not one which focuses on you? Expect to delve into on-the-job actions\, training\, skills\, promotion\, knowledge\, behaviours\, assessments\, networks\, competences and more! \nRSVP to join the session

SUMMARY:Inside PMO – PMO vs Project Controls
DESCRIPTION:Join us for a session focused on the latest Inside PMO Report – PMO Versus Project Controls. \nLaunched at the PMO Conference in London in June\, this is the eighth report the House of PMO has released – with each one focused on different themes and interest areas\, reinforcing our dedication to deepening the understanding of PMO industry dynamics. \nIn this report we investigate the current perspectives and changing dynamics between the PMO function and the project controls function. Each report is created with the contributions of experienced PMO professionals and this year the debate was held at the Houses of Parliament in London with attendance from both professionals in PMO and those in predominantly project controls functions. \nThe final report has allowed us to uncover what the definitions are of PMO and project controls; the similarities and differences between these functions\, understanding the history and how we have arrived at the current landscape\, the people and the career paths\, the services offered and what the future looks like with plenty of opportunities for both functions to make a difference to their organisations. \nWe will cover these aspects in the session and wrap up with the pertinent question\, “so what? what does mean for both functions?” \nDownload the Report\n

SUMMARY:Watch Party: Securing a Better Paid PMO Job
DESCRIPTION:In this Watch Party\, we share the session about Securing a Better Paid PMO Job which was previously run as part of our PMO Career Hour series. ‘Better paid’ in this instance means either being compensated for the value you add; being rewarded for the role you’re performing rather than what is on their job profile; getting promoted or taking the next step in your career. \nYou might also have similar reasons for being interested in a session like this – part of being successful in getting the level of pay you want is all in the planning – and having the self-confidence and self-belief to ask for it. \nJoin us in our Watch Party – a session where a pre-recorded session is running and we all chat together as it runs. Please note\, to join in with the chat you will need a YouTube account. \nHow to join in? \nJust join us here on this event listing\, and at the allotted time\, the recording will start running. Make sure you’re logged into your YouTube account and join in with the comments and chat.

SUMMARY:Career Hour - How AI Can Help in Our Careers
DESCRIPTION:Career Hour sessions at the House of PMO are exclusive to House of PMO online and full members. \nCareer Hours are run bi-monthly and enable us to concentrate on topics which help us navigate our careers in PMO. Each session brings together a smaller group of practitioners who are happy to share their own experiences – in many ways the sessions become like small coaching circles too\, where a problem shared is a problem halved. \nEach time we take a topic area and share insights from research\, papers and personal experiences and hopefully bring different ways of thinking about our careers. \nThis month the focus is on the use of AI – specifically Generative AI – and how we can use it to help us in our careers. That could be anything from helping us in the recruitment process\, to professional development\, career progression and more. \nJoin us as we explore a new tool together and see what’s possible.

SUMMARY:EXTERNAL: Birmingham: Microsoft Solution Showcase for a Data-Driven PMO
DESCRIPTION:This is an external sponsored event hosted by Program Framework with the House of PMO presenting as guest speakers. Free to attend\, in-person in Birmingham\, places are limited. \n\nTime & Location\n\n\n17 Oct 2024\, 08:30 – 12:30 \nMeeting Space at 44 Blucher Street\, 44 Blucher St\, Birmingham B1 1QJ\, UK \n\n\n\nAbout the event\n\n\nModern PMOs are busier than ever. Gartner cites a whole range of Hot Topics for PPM\, such as Demand Management\, Resource Management\, Programme and Portfolio Management\, Reporting & Dashboards\, Strategy realisation and so on. Yet many PMOs are still held back by inefficient manual processes\, disconnected data sets and the ever-ongoing struggle of engaging stakeholders. \n  \n\n\n\nWhat Microsoft cloud services help us digitally transform the PMO? \nFor any organisation already invested in Microsoft cloud\, there is an obvious path: apply the platform you already own to the challenges of the PMO. This event will help you make sense of Microsoft services so you can make a start. The newly branded Microsoft Planner is at the heart of this\, and so are services like Teams\, Power Apps\, Power Automate and Power BI as well as Copilot and other AI services. An amazing platform to unite all your data in one place\, as the basis for collaboration\, automation\, integration and efficiencies delivered through AI! \nHouse of PMO Presentation: Benefits of Friction Between PMO and Delivery Teams \nWe are going to talk about more than just technology: Our friends at House of PMO Eileen Roden and Lindsay Scott will discuss how PMOs continue to be challenged about their value to the organisation. Yet despite that\, more and more PMOs are being set up – so how can that be? Let’s uncover where the real value of the PMO is and address the elephant in the room – the friction that exists between the PMO and delivery teams. The session will discuss the underlying causes for friction\, how to work with it and how friction helps deliver higher value for everyone involved in change delivery. \nWhat you will learn from this event: \n\nWhat are the “digital transformation” tools in the Microsoft platform\nWhy do they make a unique business case for your PMO\nWhat is the “art of the possible”\, and how will AI push this even further\nWhat are the real-world considerations when undertaking a tool implementation in this platform – not least the impact on friction between stakeholders\nHow can you make a start with very little budget\n\nExpect to see plenty of practical demonstrations of real-world applications\, including our highly functional PMO application Power Framework\, built in the Microsoft Power Platform. \nRegister to attend – limited spaces \nRegistrations will be accepted via the Program Framework website here>> \n  \n

SUMMARY:Systems Thinking Really Can Help with Complexity
DESCRIPTION:We’re joined by Prof Martin Parr\, expert in systems thinking and complex project management. \nWe often need to make difficult decisions e.g. how much should I invest in automation? Should I push my board harder to change? We always have limited information\, great pressure for results and divergent options; Systems Thinking can help with all of these. \nSystems Thinking is an established approach to dealing with complexity that is now championed by central government\, the World Health Organisation and the Royal Academy of Engineering. Systems Thinking has the power to get to the heart of our problems; and one of the really powerful things that Systems Thinking offers is the ability to take a group of stakeholders on a journey of discovery. This journey is an essential enabler for organisational change. \nMartin will highlight some big projects and decisions that have moved forward because of Systems Thinking. He will also demonstrate the benefits of systems thinking in a number of areas\, including national statistics data that highlights the difference that Systems Thinking has made to a UK national project. \nWe’ll leave this session having a deeper and more practical understanding about systems thinking and how it can help the PMO better support our own organisations. \nThis session aligns with the Skills section of the PMO Competency Framework – category: Thinking. \n  \nMore About Martin \nProf Martin Parr is an expert on systems thinking and has designed the curriculum for the UK’s first Level 7 systems thinking apprenticeship. Martin has worked for over 20 years as a consultant on complex projects\, many of which have been delivered for the UK public sector. Martin has provided advice to a number of programmes with annual budgets of over £1bn\, and has taken a systems approach to reviewing the governance arrangements for GMPP with a whole life cost of around £600bn. Martin is a Visiting Fellow at Cranfield University and the Department for Education. Martin hosts the Evolving Enterprises podcast. \n

SUMMARY:The Circle of Resource Management
DESCRIPTION:The Inside PMO Report – Beyond Timesheets: The Challenges and Realities of Resource Management – the report focuses on resource management in the PMO and outlines a structured approach to managing resources across portfolio\, project\, and individual levels\, emphasising capacity planning\, allocation\, and skills development. It highlights the PMO’s central role in balancing resource demands\, ensuring alignment with organisational priorities\, and addressing the challenges of managing skilled personnel effectively. \nThe “Circle of Resource Management” concept from the report identifies three interdependent segments that are essential for managing resources within a delivery organisation: \n\nThe Portfolio Segment: This part focuses on strategic resource management\, such as capacity planning\, to ensure the organisation has the right size and capacity to deliver projects and programmes. It involves tools for planning\, modelling\, and forecasting to align resource availability with portfolio demands.\nThe Project Segment: This segment handles resource allocation and utilisation at the project level. It deals with managing the demand for resources\, tracking their usage\, and ensuring cost-effective resource allocation.\nThe Resource Segment: This focuses on individual resources and their skills\, capabilities\, and training. Components include role descriptions\, assessments\, training development\, and recruitment efforts to ensure the right people are available and equipped to work on projects.\n\nEach of these segments includes specific tasks and activities and requires appropriate tools to function effectively. The model also acknowledges the influence of business context and culture in determining where to start with resource management\, emphasising that there is no one-size-fits-all approach. \nIn this session\, we revisit the report and gain a refresher on the circle of resource management which was first published in 2017. In December 2024 we will be revisiting the subject of resource management again- using the report as a basis to dig deeper and understand the next level of detail plus find out more about the ongoing challenges that PMOs have in this area. \nThis session aligns to the resource management competence plus capability development and capacity development. \n  \n  \n

SUMMARY:PMO and the Accidental Project Managers
DESCRIPTION:When is a Project Manager Not a Project Manager? \nIn a world where organisations constantly try to get more done with fewer people\, many individuals find themselves unexpectedly thrust into project management roles.  And it can end up causing trouble – for them\, for their projects and\, of course\, for the PMO! \nIn this entertaining webinar\, experienced Project Manager turned PMO manager Jeremy Nicholls takes a look at the different types of non-project managers\, those accidental project managers that can be found in all corners of the business.  We’ll find out what makes them tick\, as well as their vulnerabilities (and\, yes\, strengths).  He’ll then look at how the PMO is placed to support each of them and help turn them from dangerous mavericks into project superstars. \nThis session is perfect for PMO professionals looking for ways to support these accidental project managers better or perhaps you yourself have found yourself managing projects unexpectedly. By the end of the webinar\, you’ll understand how to recognise the signs of an accidental project manager and\, more importantly\, how to harness their strengths with the right PMO interventions. \nAbout Jeremy Nicholls \nJeremy has worked as a project manager and PMO manager for some amazing clients over the course of his career including Linklaters LLP\, Barclays Wealth and Gatwick Airport. Nowadays\, he spends his time helping organisations deliver projects better through project consultancy\, coaching and training.  His book on project fundamentals\, The Everyday Project Manager\, is published by Routledge Press and is available to order at https://everydaypm.co.uk.

SUMMARY:Transform Your PMO into a Strategic Business Function: The BIG Opportunity for PMO
DESCRIPTION:Developing a solid strategy is hard enough. Executing it? Even harder. If your organisation is struggling to bridge the gap between strategic vision and real-world delivery\, your PMO could be the key to unlocking success. \nHowever\, PMO is traditionally associated with change projects – whether strategic or tactical. PMOs are less involved in the oversight of objectives & key results\, resource management\, dependency management etc\, across Business as Usual (BAU) and Product Groups – yet these areas are pivotal for strategy execution. \nJoin us for an exclusive member in-person event where we’ll explore how your PMO can evolve into a business function that seamlessly connects strategy to execution – in whatever domain happens. This session will help you uncover the full potential of your PMO or ePMO\, going beyond the traditional role of P3M governance to become the engine that drives your organisation’s strategy across all areas—from change portfolios to Business as Usual (BAU) and Product Groups. \nWhat You’ll Learn:\nStrategic PMO Evolution: Explore how your PMO can support strategy delivery beyond change initiatives\, influencing BAU and Product Group performance. \nCapability Building Blocks: Learn the key elements required to transform your PMO into a fully capable Business Function that drives organisational success. \nInteractive Problem Solving: Engage in discussions about the real-world challenges you face in connecting strategy to delivery and how to overcome them. \nThe BIG Lifecycle: Discover the lifecycle approach to initiating this function and take the first step towards building your PMO as a strategic powerhouse. \n\nMeet Your Speakers:\nDavid Dunning and Eileen Roden are industry experts with years of experience in PMO leadership\, strategy execution\, and business transformation. They’ll share their insights on how you can elevate your PMO and position it at the heart of your organisation’s strategic success. \n\nWhy Attend?\n\nUncover opportunities for your PMO to drive business-wide strategy execution.\nGain practical insights into building the right capabilities to succeed.\nNetwork with like-minded PMO professionals facing similar challenges.\nWalk away with a clear plan to engage stakeholders and propose a holistic strategy delivery framework.\n\n  \n\n  \nSeats are limited\, and this event is exclusive to our members. SUMMARY:Inside PMO - Resource Management Roundtable Discussion
DESCRIPTION:Inside PMO Report: 2025 Resource Management Focus \nEach year\, the House of PMO produces the Inside PMO Report\, which is shaped by discussions\, debates\, and real-life insights from PMO practitioners during our annual roundtable discussions. \nIn 2025\, the report will focus on resource management\, revisiting and building on themes explored in our 2016 report\, Beyond Timesheets: The Challenges and Realities of Resource Management. That report introduced the “Circle of Resource Management\,” a model that has since guided PMO practitioners in overcoming challenges in managing resources across projects\, programmes\, portfolios\, and capability development. \nThis year\, we will refresh and re-examine the Circle of Resource Management model at our upcoming roundtable\, looking at what’s working in PMOs and organisations today\, what hasn’t worked\, and the current challenges PMOs face—eight years after the original report. \n  \nThe Roundtable Discussion\nTo shape the 2025 report\, the House of PMO\, with support from the Houses of Parliament\, will host a roundtable discussion\, open to corporate and full members who can share their experiences in resource management. \nIf your PMO has made significant strides in areas like: \n\nStrategic resource management\nResource planning\nResource forecasting\nCapacity planning\nCapability development\n\nWe encourage you to register and attend the event\, sharing your own experiences as well as meeting other PMO practitioners with lessons to share. \nEvent Details \n\nDate: Monday\, 2nd December 2024\nTime: 2:00 pm – 5:00 pm\nLocation: Houses of Parliament\, Westminster\, London\n\n  \nSeats are limited\, so please register to secure your place and contribute to shaping the future of resource management in PMOs. We ask that only one representative per organisation attends\, and recommend that attendees have significant experience or recent involvement in resource management within their PMO. \n  \n

SUMMARY:PMO Career Hour - Moving Between Industries
DESCRIPTION:Career Hour sessions at the House of PMO are exclusive to House of PMO online and full members. \nCareer Hours are run bi-monthly and enable us to concentrate on topics which help us navigate our careers in PMO. Each session brings together a smaller group of practitioners who are happy to share their own experiences – in many ways the sessions become like small coaching circles too\, where a problem shared is a problem halved. \nEach time we take a topic area and share insights from research\, papers and personal experiences and hopefully bring different ways of thinking about our careers. \nThis month the focus is on exploring how PMO experience\, knowledge and skills can be transferred between different industries\, and what practitioners need to consider when making a move to a different sector.
